TH400 (3L80) Modulator, Washer Kit and Flywheel

Here some other parts that we carry for the the Turbo Hydromatic THM-400 (a/k/a 3L80) automatic transmission.

The thrust washer kit covers the years 1965 to 1998. The Modulator pictured below is the single-red-stripe adjustable modulator. This is the one that is usually shipped when one is ordered unless you specify another when ordering. All modulators are good for 1965 to 1998 and here are the other options:

Black and Red Stripe
Dual Red Stripe
Mechanical Modulator Controlled by Cable
also available: Vacuum Regulator Pump

We have several flywheels available too. The one pictured is for 1986 Blazer with the 6.2L Diesel; the flywheel is 14.13" wide with 139 teeth.

Borg Warner BW-4405 Transfer Case Clutch Housing Assembly

Unlike other chain driven transfer cases, the BW4405 transfer case has a clutch housing. The clutch housing is part of the system that engages and disengages the transfer case.

When ordering the clutch housing assembly you will receive the housing, clutches, steels and other parts necessary for its proper use and replacement as pictured below.

A404, A413, A470, A670 Governor

The A404 (30TH), A413, A470 and the A670 (all three a/k/a 31TH) share the same governor. The only thing to note when ordering the governor is the year. One is from 1978 to 1980 and the other one is from 1981 and up (pictured below).

At time of this posting the 78-80 was available reman or new and the other one only reman. Also available are the:

Anti-Stick Spring and Bracket (installs outside the governor)
Anti-Stick Spring (installs inside the governor)
Governor Support and Support Retainer
Oil Baffel - inside Differential or Extension Housing

A500 (40RH, 42RE....) Reverse Drum and Center Support

The A-500, 40RH, 42RH, 42RE and 44RE are all in the same transmission family line. The RH indicates non-electric and the RE indicates the unit is controlled electronically instead of hydraulically.

The reverse drum comes in two different design; one comes with no washer under the support snap ring (88-04) and the other with a washer under the support snap ring (90-04). At first glance you can not even tell the difference and it is necessary to properly identify the one you need when ordering.

Over drive piston housing (center support) originally came with or without governor feed holes. The new ones retrofits all past ones and are compatible with or without the governor feed holes.

A541E Solenoid

The solenoids for the A541E are pretty straight forward. There are two shift solenoid which are wired together and the lock-up solenoid.

The shift solenoid are the 1 and 2 shift or it can be referred to as the A and B shifts. A bracket is included with the shift solenoid as pictured below. The lock-up solenoid (TCC) is also pictured below and it is the one by itself. The A541E automatic transmission was introduced in 1994 and the solenoids are the same for all years.

A solenoid kit is available too. It contains the shift and lock-up solenoid plus the bracket.

NP246 Vehicle Speed Sensor

The vehicle speed sensor, the VSS, is used in the New Process Gear Transfer Case NP-246. Depending on year and vehicle model it can use two or three. There are two types of the VSS. A push in model or a screw in model like the one pictured below.

To be on the safe side, it is good practice to replace these sensors when rebuilding the transfer case. The Np246 is primarily used in GM vehicles like the Suburban, Avalanche, Escalade, Tahoe and Yukon.

C-3, A4LD, 5R55E Sun Gear

The C3, A4LD , 4R44E, 5R44E, 4R55E and the 5R55E share the Forward and Overdrive Sun Gear. The Overdrive Sun Gear is also used by the 5R55N, 5R55S and the 5R55W from 1991 to 2001 (24 tooth) used with the 25 tooth planet.

The forward sun gear could be either a no bushing type as pictured below or a two-bushing type. Here are the year break down by transmission model:

C3, A4LD
1974-1995; 2 Bushing Type
1985-1995; No Bushing Type

4R44E / 55RE; 5R44E / 55RE

Sun Shell and Gear Kits available.

ZF5HP19, ZF5HP19FL, ZF5HP19FLA Speed Sensor

The ZF 5HP19, 5HP19FL and the 5HP19FLA use and share some of the same speed sensors. These units are used by Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Porsche just to name a few.

The part numbers for the speed sensor listed in this post are primarily for North American applications. Some part numbers are available everywhere and some are not. As you will see in the pictures below the speed sensor are not necessarily part numbers for vehicles manufactured for the North American Market.

Speed sensors have the part number right on them as illustrated below. This makes identifying the part you need easy and simple. When ordering a sensor, or any part, just locate the 10 digit part number. Some speed sensors might contain a wire with at end attached to the main body (see pic below).

AXOD, AXODE, AX4S Pump

Here is the break down on the pump for the AXOD, AXOD-E and the AX4S. When ordering the pump for these units the year is very important and if you are not sure of the year the casting number can also identify the pump needed.

The AXOD in 1987 has a casting number of RFE7 and comes with the separator plate.

The AXOD in 1988 has a casting number of RFE8 and comes with the separator plate.

The AXOD from 1989 to 1990 has a casting number of RFE9 and comes with the separator plate.

The AXODE and the AX4S pump is the same from 1991 to 2003 and comes with the casting number RFF1 and does not come with the separator plate. This is the 5 solenoid version pump.
