AW55-50SN Filter (AF33-5, RE5F22A)

The Aisin Warner 55-50SN is also know as the AF33-5 and RE5F22A. It is used by Saturn, Volvo and Saab to name a few. There are two possible filters for this unit and both have a year range of 2001 and up. The filter sold the most out of this store is the one without the rib. If you are not sure I suggest purchasing both filters.

As you can see in the pictures below the top of the filters are identical on both filters. On the reverse you will see where one is pretty much flat with no obstructions and the other one has a flap like design know as the rib.

5L40E, 5L50E Sub Piston Kit

The 4L40E, 5L40E, 5L50E transmission have a series of molded pistons in the transmission, you can click here to see an earlier post on the piston kit.

The year group of 1999 to 2001 a sub-piston kit might be necessary. It seems the 4x4 version of the transmission contains a slightly different size in one or two of the pistons and there could be a difference in piston size depending where the unit was manufactured.

Although not necessary in all circumstances it might be prudent to order the sub-kit when ordering the master kit with pistons or the piston kit.

AOD, AODE, 4R70W Thrust and Selective Washers

The Ford AOD (FIOD), AODE, 4R70W, 4R75W, 4R70E and the 4R75E share the Thrust and Selective Washers (1980-Up). The AOD is the only non-electronic unit of the bunch listed.

Here is a brief description of each:
#1 Green 0.052"
#2 Yellow 0.070"
#3 Natural 0.087"
#4 Red 0.104"
#5 Blue 0.121"

There is a Bronze Washer in the "Thrust Washer Kit" as indicated in the picture below.

Washer are available in kits or individually. Also available individually are the Rear Planet, Direct Drum to Hub and Reverse Drum to Forward Drum washers.

4L60E Valve Body Information

The 4L60E and 4L65E use 5 or 6 solenoids depending on the year of the unit. All 4L60E premium re-manufactured valve bodies come with updated AFL, TCC and accumulator valves, new EPC and PSM where applicable. All other solenoids are tested.

When ordering a premium re-manufactured valve body here are the options:

From 1993 to 1994 there are 4 solenoids in the valve body and one in the pump for a total of 5 solenoids.

In 1995 the valve body came with 5 solenoids (came with the PWM TCC solenoid) and one in the pump (6 solenoids in total).

From 1996 to 2001 came with 6 solenoids in total and the 3-2 downshift is on-off and the EPC is a black body with spade terminal design.

Here we have a year overlap from 2001 to 2002 with the one above. One of the difference between this one and the one above is the full annular design present in this year group.

And finally year group 2003 to 2006 uses a silver EPC with molded connector and contains the full annular TCC.

AW 55-50SN Technical Manual

If there is one technical - repair manual that is searched for, and oddly enough not easily located, is the one for the Aisin Warner AW55-50SN 5 Speed Automatic transmission. There is good reason for this; the truth of the matter is, as of the date of this post, there is not one. Well, it should be said not a comprehensive one yet.

We carry a "binder" technical manual. What is a binder tech manual you ask? Well it is a manual that is in a binder with loose leaf pages inside clear plastic protectors. This is a first edition, if you will, of the technical manual. There is basic information of the unit, pictures, exploded views and illustrations.

When our customers find out that there is even a binder for this unit they express great relief and happiness that there is something out there written on the unit and they purchase it right away. There is no definite date as of yet when a "regular" technical - repair manual will be available. As soon as it becomes available it will be posted on this blog.

4L60E and 4L65E Lower Valve Body Gasket.

There are two possible lower valve body gasket for the 4L60E and only one possibility for the 4L65E. From 1993 to 2000 is one design and the other, which includes the 4L65E, is from 2001 and up. Lower valve body can also be referred as the gasket between the spacer plate and valve body.

In the picture below you can see from the arrow some of the more noticeable differences between the two. The one with the white stripe and what appears to be an "A" and "B" cut into the gasket is the one from 2001 and up.

Seal-E-Zee Molded Piston Installation Tool

The Seal-E-Zee is a tool consisting of 6 cones and lubricants manufactured by Lube Guard. It is used to install lip-seals and molded pistons. Can be purchased as a kit or just the cones or the lubricant sprays as a set. The starter kit, pictured below, contains 6 cones, one Step-One spray, one Step-Two X-Treme spray, Demo CD and Product Sheet.

Seal-E-Zee prepares the rubber material for quick installation. Works well with all types of rubber and will not harm the rubber (o-rings, valve body end caps, teflon, seals...). Can be used in other industries.

Z-Pack Clutches

Z-Pack Single Sided Clutch System is a product developed and manufactured by Raybestos Powertrain. The Z-Pack reduces heat in the clutch pack and with its design improvements and X-32 friction material, also developed by Raybestos, reduces coning or warping. As a result, torque capacity, transmission life and clutch life are all improved. Another benefit might come in the way of a lighter clutch pack due to the single sided design.

We carry the Z-Pack for the Chevy 700R4, 4L60E, 4L80E, 4T60E and others. For the Ford the E4OD, 4R100 and others.

722.6 Series Mercedes Benz Transmission

The 722.6 Series is an automatic 5 speed rear wheel drive transmission from Mercedes Benz. This unit is used in some Dodge and Chrysler models and know as the W5A580. Depending on year and engine size some of the Dodge models equipped with this transmission are the Magnum and Nitro; and some of the Chrysler models are the 300 Series and Crossfire.

Some of the Mercedes model that came fitted with this unit, depending on year and engine size too, are the C Class AMG, CL 600, E300 Diesel, E320 Diesel, SL 600 Roadster and E55.

There are few different types of kits available for the 722.6. Here we will go into more detail into the kits so you can be better informed when ordering.

There is a year break in the kits, from 1996 to 2001 and 2002 and up. From 1996 to 2001 the frictions are double sided. That is the frictions (clutch plates) have material on both sides and require steels to go between them. From 2002 and up the frictions are single sided and do not require steels. The reason for this is that one side has material and the other side does not, so the side without material stacks against the side with material.

There is also another factor to take into consideration when placing your order for the master kit or the banner kit. The K2 clutch pack frictions are 5.25" or 5.45" inches in overall diameter and should be measured from tooth tip to tooth tip. Engines that are smaller than 3.6L uses the 5.25" K2 friction and are referred to as light duty. Engines that are 3.6L and larger uses the 5.45" K2 frictions and are referred to as heavy duty.

The overhaul kit is the same for all years and configurations. It is always suggested to measure your K2 clutch pack for proper identification of the kit required. I have seen where a vehicle with an engine smaller than 3.6L came with a transmission that had the K2 frictions for one with an engine larger than the 3.6L

4R44E, 5R55E, 5R55W

The 4R44E, 5R55E and the 5R55W share most transmission parts, among them the solenoids. The solenoids are only distinguished by the year of the vehicle. From 1995 to 1996 there is one set of solenoids and from 1997 and up there is another set of solenoids.

A master kit can be obtained for each year group and the individual solenoids are also available. Below you will find pictures of the solenoids. A few of the vehicles that are equipped with this rear wheel drive transmission are: Ford Explorer, Ranger and Mercury Mountaineer.
