TF-80SC / 81SC Valve Body Sidelined?

The TF-80SC, an automatic 6 speed unit, is available new and should be available re-manufactured soon (no set date for the reman at time of posting).

This unit is manufactured by Aisin Warner and is it also referred to as:

- AWTF80SC (Peugeot 307, 407, 607,

- AF40-6 (Alfa Romeo Brera, Spider, 159; Buick Regal; Cadillac BLS; Chevrolet Vectra; Lancia Delta)
- AM6 (Citroen C4, C5, C6, C8, Synergie Evasion)
- AF21 / TF81-SC (Ford 500, Fusion, Mondeo; Lincoln MKZ, Zephyr; Mercury Milan, Montego)

Vehicles mentioned above are a partial listing and there could be other makes and models not listed. This transmission was introduced around 2006 and vehicles listed above could have a different transmission depending on year and engine size.

8 Speed Automatics From Aisin

Aisin Warner comes out with what seems to be a first in the automatic transmission industry, an 8 speed unit.

The TL-80SN is branded by Aisin as the worlds first high performance 8 speed for luxury vehicles. This unit is used in the Lexus GS460, IS F, LS460 and is know as the AA80E. The TL-80NF is a high torque all wheel drive unit also developed for luxury and off road vehicles.

Aisin claims on there website that this unit is fuel efficient, quite and uses engine torque efficiently. Both units where developed jointly with Toyota.

Update! 09G Transmission Frictions

I received word about a month ago that the 09G, a/k/a Aisin Warner TF60SN, could come with 52 or 60 tooth frictions in the K2 clutch pack.

My guess is that it will depend on the vehicle model like the Nissan RE5R05A where some vehicles use the 50 tooth reverse frictions or the 40 tooth reverse frictions like the Titan, Armada and QX56.

Aisin Warner Valve Body for the TF60SN (VW 09M, 09G)

There is little information available for the TF60 SN as of the date of this posting. What I have read and been told by customers about the valve body is not as detailed as we would want it to be.

This is what we know so far. There are two different versions of the valve body, the late and early versions. The early version is up to May of 2004 and contains pressure sensors where the arrows are located in the picture below. From June 2004 and up (early version) the sensors are not placed on the valve body.

When handling the sensors off the late one you must be careful as you will expose two small pins. If you turn the valve body the pins could fall off make it extremely hard to find due to their size.

The valve bodies have one other distinction for the late and early; the transmission oil cooler is on the transmission or is remote (off the transmission).

We carry genuine Volkswagen 09M and 09G oem valve bodies an Aisin Warner part with solenoids. This unit is also used in the Seat, Skoda, BMW and others.

AW55-50SN Bushings

The Aisin Warner AW-55-50SN Transmission bushings are now available.

The Bushing Kit (Planetary Bushing not included) comes with the front and rear stator, 2 front sun gear, one rear and one pump/converter bushing.

The planetary bushing is sold separately. In order for this bushing to work the planet must be machined and the bushing must be lock tight into place. The bushing in place now are poorly supported and have a tendency of spinning in the case causing damage.

AW55-50SN, AF33-5 Forward and Direct Clutch Assembly

The AW 55-50SN uses this Forward and Direct Clutch Assembly. Depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle this part will vary. The one pictured below and to the left is for a 2000 and up Volvo with 7 lube holes in the shaft, 20 splines and it is .846" where the bushing lands on the shaft.

AW55-50SN Filter (AF33-5, RE5F22A)

The Aisin Warner 55-50SN is also know as the AF33-5 and RE5F22A. It is used by Saturn, Volvo and Saab to name a few. There are two possible filters for this unit and both have a year range of 2001 and up. The filter sold the most out of this store is the one without the rib. If you are not sure I suggest purchasing both filters.

As you can see in the pictures below the top of the filters are identical on both filters. On the reverse you will see where one is pretty much flat with no obstructions and the other one has a flap like design know as the rib.

AW 55-50SN Technical Manual

If there is one technical - repair manual that is searched for, and oddly enough not easily located, is the one for the Aisin Warner AW55-50SN 5 Speed Automatic transmission. There is good reason for this; the truth of the matter is, as of the date of this post, there is not one. Well, it should be said not a comprehensive one yet.

We carry a "binder" technical manual. What is a binder tech manual you ask? Well it is a manual that is in a binder with loose leaf pages inside clear plastic protectors. This is a first edition, if you will, of the technical manual. There is basic information of the unit, pictures, exploded views and illustrations.

When our customers find out that there is even a binder for this unit they express great relief and happiness that there is something out there written on the unit and they purchase it right away. There is no definite date as of yet when a "regular" technical - repair manual will be available. As soon as it becomes available it will be posted on this blog.

Aisin Warner TF-80SC, TF-81SC

The Aisin Warner AW TF-80SC and TF-81SC is a 6 speed front wheel drive unit. It replaced the 5 speed front wheel drive Jacto JF506E in some vehicle models. The TF-80SC is also know as the AF40 and AF4 depending on the vehicle manufacture and the the TF-81SC is also know as the AF21 and AW21.

It was introduced in 2005 and used by Ford for the Five Hundred, Freestyle, Mondeo and Fusion. Lincoln uses it in the MKZ and Zephyr; the Milan, and Montego for Mercury Models. Mazda 6S (AW6A-EL), CX7, CX9 and 2007 MPV came supplied with this unit as the Volvo V60R, V70R, 80 and 90 Series. The Opel Vectra Zafira, and some non-US models of Saab, Lancia, Vauxhall and Peugeot vehicles are equipped with this unit too. Alfa Romeo's 159; Citroen's C4, C5, C6 and C8 (AM6); Land Rover's Freelander II and LR2 are also epuipeed with it.

There might be some slight differences in the unit, for example the bell housing metal clad seal is different between the Ford Fusion and the 500 but the overall configuration is the same.

AW50-40LE, AW50-42LE Torque Converter

The AW50-40Le and the AW50-42LE are 4 speed automatic transmission manufactured by Aisin Warner. Presently Toyota is the major share holder of Aisin Warner with Aisin Seiki coming in second. Originally created to produce rear wheel drive units, Aisin now makes front wheel drive and all wheel drive units including power trains for hybrid vehicles.

There are four possible torque converters for the 50-40LE (AF14-20) and the 50-42LE (50-42LM). Two converters are for most applications and there are two specifically used in the Volvo.

AW55-50SN, AW55-51SN Valve Body

At the present time there are four different versions of the AW5550SN (AW5551SN) Transmission. There is the one used in the Volvo and Nissan version with first and second designs. The Saturn and Saab version also have first and second design.

One can distinguish between the Volvo and Saturn by the S2 solenoid. The SLS and SLT solenoid will identify between the first and second design. Another, possibly easier, way to identify between the 1st and 2nd design is by locating the casting letter located just above and to the right of the SLS solenoid. No letter or an "A" will indicate 1st design and the letter "B" or "C" indicates 2nd design.

For GM and Saturn the AW 55-50SN might also be referred to as the AF33-5, and for Nissan it is referred to as the RE5F22A.

When replacing the valve body and or rebuilding this transmission a reflash or relearn may be required for proper performance. In some models shift feels and downshift clunks could result as well as shorter transmission life. Always use proper transmission fluid.
