Busted Pistons; Where Could We Go? (01M)

This posting will focus on the molded pistons for the Volkswagen automatic transmission models: 095, 096, 097, 098 (01M, 01N, 01P).

It is more important to focus on the date rather than the model when ordering the pistons for the above mentioned models.

Two piston kits are available:
- Piston Set with Molded Rubber (5 Piston Transmission) 1990 to Early 1994
- Piston Set with Molded Rubber (7 Piston Transmission) Late 1994 and Up

Individual Bonded Pistons:
- 3-4 Clutch K3 1990-E1994 or L1994-Up
- 3-4 Retainer L1994-Up
- 2-4 Clutch B2 1990-Up
- Forward Clutch K1 1990-E1994 or L1994-Up
- Forward Retainer L1994-Up
- Reverse Clutch K2 1990-Up
- Lw Reverse B1 1990-Up

If you are not sure which transmission you have you can go to the drivers side door (most vehicles) and search for the manufacturing date. Other wise once the transmission is disassembled you can count the number of pistons and order accordingly.

The Electrifying Side of 01P, 01M & 01N

The electrical side side of the 01N, 01M and 01P (a/k/a: AG4-095/096/097/098) come down to switches, solenoids, sensors and wire harness as the most commonly replaced electrical parts.

There are three multi functions switches (PRNDL):
Square with 7 Prongs 1990 to Early 1994,
Round with 7 Prongs Late 1994 to 1997, and
90 Degree with 7 Prongs 1998 and up.

Two solenoids came is this unit, the shift solenoid and the epc. Depending on your unit the shift solenoids are all the same and uses between 5 and 6; same with the epc and can use up to two.

On some models the output sensor doubles as the input sensor if they are both the same size. In the case one sensor is longer than the other you would have a different output sensor, this means the longer one is an output sensor. The input sensor is the same for all applications.

New Parts Notice for the VW 09K

Cobra Transmission is pleased to announce the availability of the Banner and Master Rebuild Kit for the 09K used in the Volkswagen T5 Transporter. Both Kits are available with and without pistons.

The T5 replaced the T4 around 2004. It is Volkswagen's medium size commercial vehicle. It can be used as van to move cargo around or as a people mover. It also comes in different wheel bases and configuration.

The T5 is also know in some markets as the Eurovan, Shuttle, Kombi, Caravelle, California and Multivan

Volkswagen VW 020 Manual Transmission

The Volkswagen VW020 is a 5 speed front wheel drive manual gear box with an aluminum rear cover used from 1984 and up.

There is a 4 speed version of the 020 as well. 5 speed version come with a 25mm or with a 26mm rear input bearing and a 30mm OD caged roller input bearing.

A 5 speed with the 32mm OD caged roller input bearing and a 26mm rear input bearing is also an option.

Some of the vehicles that came with this unit was the Jetta and Rabbit.

VW095, VW096, VW097, VW098

The Master and Banner Kit for the 095, 096, 097 and 098 come with molded pistons as part of the kit.

The Overhaul Kit dose not include the Piston Kit. Piston Kits are available separately.

Piston Kits come with 5 pistons from 1990 to Early 1994 and 7 pistons from Late 1994 and up.
