5L40E / 5L50E Solenoids

The 5L40E and the 5L50E is a five speed electronically controlled rear wheel drive transmission manufactured by General Motors. This unit uses four solenoids, three shift and one electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid. The shift solenoids are exactly the same and control the 1-2, 2-3 and 4-5 shifts according to where they are located.

As of the date of publishing this post the shift solenoids do not change for year or vehicle. The EPC is the same from 1999 to 2003 (see picture below) and it changes for 2004 and up. There is an aftermarket EPC for the 99-03 made by Borg Warner that is slightly different compared to the dealer one but is completley compatble. The one pictured below is OEM 99-03.
